Sr. Julie Billiart establishes the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur

Fr. William Joseph Chaminade establishes the Society of Mary

Eight Sisters arrive in Cincinnati and establish the first Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur school in the United States

Marianists arrive in the United States and establish the Province of America in Cincinnati

Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur arrive in Dayton by canal boat from Cincinnati and begin their endeavors to begin an all girls high school in Dayton

Marianists establish the first Marianist school in the United States: St. Mary’s School for Boys. This institution was the first Catholic High School in Dayton and would later become the University of Dayton

Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur open Notre Dame Academy at Ludlow and Franklin

Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur move the all-girls high school to Villa Julienne convent on the grounds of the Barney Estate on Homewood Ave. and begin construction on a beautiful building that today is protected by the Dayton Landmarks Commission. Some students remained at the Ludlow location until 1927 when all of the girls moved to Homewood. They rename the school after the Mother General, Mother Marie Julienne.

The Marianist purchase the property known as Notre Dame Academy from the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, and move the high school students at St. Mary’s Institute to Chaminade High School

Julienne High School graduates the first full class at its Homewood Ave. site

1933

Chaminade earns a reputation of dominating athletic programs with the hiring of head football coach Gerard “Fuzzy” Faust, and leading into a long legacy of athletic greatness1941 SM More than 700 Men of Chaminade would serve our country during WWII

Sisters of Charity open a two-year institution to train Catholic girls in the art of business skills

Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur close the County Day School which had been in operation from 1922-1948

A major addition to the school is completed with the addition of a gymnasium, new cafeteria, and classrooms on the corner of Ludlow and Washington Streets

Marianists divides into four provinces throughout the country

The original red brick building is demolished and the school is rebuilt into the structure that stands today

Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur expand beyond the classroom to missions in Brazil

Girls begin participating as cheerleaders for their all-male counterpart school, Chaminade

Attendance hits an all-time high when a combined 785 graduate from Chaminade, Julienne or St. Joseph

After adding sophomores six years earlier, St. Joseph adds freshmen and becomes a four-year high school

St. Julie Billiart is canonized by Pope Paul VI

Chaminade and Julienne High Schools merge; Marianists and Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur agree to own and operate Chaminade Julienne

With declining enrollment, Sisters of Charity close St. Joseph and a majority of the students finish their high school careers at Chaminade Julienne

Girls are given the opportunity to participate in OHSAA sanctioned competition for the first time in school history

The Athletic Hall of Fame is initiated

New era of athletic success begins with men and women’s basketball, football and volleyball

Fr. Chaminade is beatified and given the title of “Blessed” by Pope John Paul II

Progress begins on the Campus Master Plan as properties surrounding campus is acquired and old buildings are demolished

Sister Dorothy Stang, SNDdeN is murdered in Brazil

579 Marianists in the US Province operate 18 high schools and three universities through out the United States and Ireland. There are Marianists serving in East Africa, Mexico, Phillipines and India

1,600 Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur serve in 32 states and 14 countries including Belgium, Brazil, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Great Britain, Japan, Kenya, Nigeria, Peru, South Africa and Zimbabwe
