Before & After School Student Drop Off & Pick Up

Dear CJ student and parents,

Last spring, the city of Dayton invited Chaminade Julienne and our neighbors to begin a discussion about vehicle and pedestrian traffic flow around our neighborhood. Between CJ, Emmanuel Church, the Marianist Mission, and other nearby organizations, there are many people who travel by car and by foot each day on the streets surrounding the school. Our goals in participating in the process were to (1) improve the safe use by our students of CJ parking lots and nearby streets; and (2) include current and future campus development projects in the long-term plans of the city of Dayton and our neighbors.

It was a good discussion and resulted in some of the changes you have already seen:

• Washington Street heading west between Main and Ludlow now merges to one lane before getting to the CJ campus, instead of right in front of our parking lots as in recent years.

• No parking during school times on the south side of Franklin Street between Perry and Ludlow Streets, allowing this to be a safe and convenient pick-up and drop-off site for students.

• Reducing on-street parking on Ludlow Street and Perry Street, allowing greater visibility for both pedestrians and drivers.

Other changes, like reducing Ludlow Street from four lanes of traffic to three and improving Washington Street, are envisioned in the future, as the city is able to secure funding from the state and federal governments for these types of changes.

Changes will go into effect on October 1, 2010:

In conjunction with the City of Dayton, CJ is adopting additional improvements to traffic patterns and parking to improve safety for our students on campus. We will monitor the impact of the changes and make adjustments as necessary.  While the additional travel around campus may be a slight inconvenience at times (especially during morning rush), we are hopeful that all parents and students will realize the benefits of a safer campus and understand the need to follow the following regulations:

1.  Parents should use the south side of Franklin St. as a pick-up and drop-off location for their students. Westbound traffic on Washington St. will proceed to Longworth, turn right on Eaker; South on Perry; and through to a drop-off point on the south side of Franklin.

• Parking Lot A, off Washington St. (nearest to the gym and auditorium), can no longer be accessed and used as a pick-up and drop-off location.

• Do not use Parking Lot C in front of Emmanuel Church to gain access to Franklin St. Employees and volunteers at Emmanuel Church and the Marianist Mission use this parking lot all day. It is unsafe for their young students and guests for us to use this parking lot as “short cut.”

• Do not use the north side of Franklin St. as a pick-up or drop-off spot. It is not safe for students to attempt to cross the street in the mix of traffic.

2.  Ludlow St., south of Franklin, is a bus zone only. This area must remain clear and available to bus drivers for the transfer of our students. Parking or student drop-off or pick-up at this location is prohibited.

3.  There is no access to the fire lane located next to the gym and auditorium.  This is reserved for approved deliveries and emergency vehicles only.

4.  Visitor parking areas remains the same in our parking lots, and can be accessed any time by parents who are coming into the school for a visit with a teacher or administrator.  Please continue to use the courtyard door and come to the Welcome Center to check in.

5.  After school, student athletes will load buses for competition and practice on the closed section of Franklin St. near Blue and Green Field.

6.  After 4 p.m. during the week, or anytime on the weekends, parents can wait in Parking Lot A, closest to the gym and auditorium, for their students leaving athletic or performing arts practices.

7.  Students who park in the Emmanuel parking lot should enter the lot from Perry St. in the morning and exit onto Perry after school.  Please do not use Franklin St. to access this parking lot.  This will limit the amount of traffic on Franklin before and after school.
