Peace Projects

Art students at CJ are involved with several projects and exhibits throughout the year which promote peace in our world.

The Global ART Peace Project

This is a collaborative effort among CJ artists with the result being sent to another school somewhere in the world. In past years, CJ has exchanged projects with schools in Montana, Utah, Arizona, Indonesia, and Africa. CJ is currently displaying a painting from Sunrise School in Utah. CJ has been a participant in this project since 1998.

The Holocaust Thematic Unit and Exhibit

"The Max May Memorial" project teaches peace by teaching not only about the horrors of war but additionally students have a chance to create projects that reflect upon ideas of respect for each other. This gives them a chance to teach others though their own personal artworks on display.  It all starts with us and one person can make a difference!

CJ students have won many awards at this exhibit but even more important than these awards are the opportunities to sow the seed of Peace through their projects and to get the viewer thinking. The exhibitions held at the Synagogue in Oakwood, Market Street and the Dayton Art Institute is a powerful display of creative expression. This exhibition was started about 18 years ago by Renate Frydman, the grandaughter of Max May.

Worldwide Peace Symbols

Worldwide peace symbols are studied each semester in the art deptartment. Peace in action is the focus of this study, especially since most historical peace symbols are about learning to communicate, educate, care, live off the land, sing , dance together, eat well, etc. Utilizing ideas from Reach Across Dayton and themes like  The Global Art Peace Project,  Peace on Earth Works,  from the Marianist Environmental Education Center, CJ students have plenty of symbolism to work with every year.
