Ellen Downer

Both of my children attended Chaminade Julienne in the 80’s. I was very impressed with the education they received. When I decided to return to teaching in the early 90’s, I knew where I wanted to teach. I was hired as a part time teacher. I had been away from the profession for many years. The first year back was difficult but the mentoring & support that I received was invaluable. I was offered a full time position the next year & I will always feel that this is the right place for me. Since that first year, 19 years ago, there have been numerous times when I have appreciated the support of the C J community.

When I came back to teaching after a 21 year absence, I realized my methodology and philosophy needed to be adjusted. Things had really changed. I gradually saw the value of co-operative learning. I realized that there are many ways of teaching the same concept. However, discipline that had always been an important part of my class room management did not change. I found that nontraditional teaching and a disciplined class room are compatible. More recently, technology has offered a challenge. I was given the opportunity to have an over head projector in my room 10 years ago. I immediately embraced technology. Power points and access to the internet have improved instruction. Electronic grade book and grades on line have facilitated communication between teacher and parents.

I am currently a communicant of St Albert the Great.
