Nominations Open for Big Hoopla STEM Teacher of the Year

Chaminade Julienne is proud to recognize great teachers in the STEM fields with the Big Hoopla STEM Teacher of the Year award. The award is in recognition a current K-8 educator’s efforts and contributions in the STEM fields in the Dayton region. Dee Van Brackel, a K-5 STEM teacher at Stephen Bell Elementary and Bell Creek Intermediate schools in Bellbrook, was the inaugural recipient of the award in 2018.

Nominations should be for a current teacher who is exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, and teaches a STEM subject in a Dayton region school (K-8 in a public - including charter - or private school). Former or present students, parents, administrators and co-workers can submit an application on behalf of a teacher.

The recipient of the award will receive:

  • A $1,000 grant from the Local Organizing Committee and Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School to be used to improve STEM learning in the classroom
  • An official Big Hoopla STEM Teacher of the Year plaque awarded at the Big Hoopla STEM Challenge
  • 50 Upper Arena tickets for all First Four March Madness games to be shared by the teacher with his or her students and families
  • 4 Hoopla Central VIP Passes for one evening

Save the Date

The Big Hoopla STEM Challenge, being held at Chaminade Julienne Catholic High School, will be on Sunday, March 17. Check-in and registration for this free event begins at 12 p.m. with opening ceremonies starting at 1 p.m. Along with basketball challenges there will be STEM themed exhibits and activities. Students will enjoy free pizza, hoopla t-shirts and chances to win prizes including First Four Tickets. Pre-registration is encouraged and can be completed on the Big Hoopla website, found here.
