Homecoming at Chaminade Julienne this year wasn’t just about the dance—it was about community, generosity, and ensuring that every student had the opportunity to shine. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated faculty, staff, and students, two unique events brought that spirit to life: a Tie Bar and Dress Donation, and a free Barber and Beauty Shop. Both events showcased how coming together as a community to support one another can make Homecoming more accessible and memorable for everyone.
It all began with an idea. Before Homecoming, Karen Long, ECHO counselor, and Dan Eiser, English teacher, brainstormed how to help students look their best without the financial burden that often comes with such events. Together, they organized a Tie Bar and Dress Donation, where staff members donated dresses, ties, jewelry, and other accessories. The donated items were displayed in the hallways during lunch and homeroom for students to browse and take what they needed, completely free of charge.
The Tie Bar, which consisted of three long tables full of ties, provided not only an array of ties but also a chance to learn a life skill. Andy Taube, college and career coordinator, along with other faculty and staff members, spent time in the hallways showing students how to tie a tie.
“From weddings, to proms, to job interviews, and even funerals, wearing a tie has always signified important and special events for me,” said Taube. “I love that CJ offered a tie bar, and it was a joy to talk to our students about the way a tie can level-up almost any situation. I also had fun teaching students who had never tied a tie before!”
In addition to the Tie Bar and Dress Donation, Karen Long, Clarissa Niebrugge Andreu ‘25, and Kate Lehner ‘93, accounts payable coordinator at CJ and former cosmetologist, spearheaded a free Barber and Beauty Shop initiative. The event offered students an opportunity to get their hair, nails, and makeup done at no cost, thanks to a talented team of volunteers. They were able to recruit a professional barber, staff hairstylists, student and professional nail technicians, and professional makeup artists to make the experience truly special.
Clarissa Niebrugge Andreu ‘25, who has her sights set on attending cosmetology school, was instrumental in making the event happen.
“One day, I was talking with Mrs. Long about how it was unfortunate that people might not have enough money or time to get fully ready for Homecoming,” said Niebrugge Andreu. “We wished there was a way we could do something for them, so then I started asking my friends to see if they would be interested if we did nails, makeup, lashes, hair, etc., for free—and of course, they said yes. From there, I got the permission we needed. It took a while to get all the supplies, volunteers, and time to make this happen. In the end, it all worked out well.”
Clarissa went on to describe the positive impact of the event. “I did six sets of nails, Mrs. Pearn did four hairstyles, a student’s grandma did two haircuts, and the makeup artist did a couple of students’ makeup. It turned out to be absolutely amazing. I think people were pleased with the outcomes; I know I was. The hope is to continue this for more dances and more years. I would love it if next year someone could take this on as a Capstone project.”
For students like Clara Arias ’26, the Barber and Beauty Shop was an experience to remember. “The whole experience was welcoming, and all the volunteers seemed eager to help!” Clara said. “Mrs. Pearn, who did my hair, was sweet and fun to talk to. I am so grateful to Ms. Long for organizing this event!”
During the event, the atmosphere was festive and lively, with music playing and treats like pizza, beverages, donuts, and desserts available for all attendees. It wasn’t just about the hairstyles or the dresses; it was about creating a space where students could feel cared for, supported, and ready to enjoy one of the most memorable nights of the year.
Faculty, staff, and students all came together to lift one another up, ensuring that every student could step into Homecoming feeling confident and special.
